China’s Ministry of Education announced that by the end of 2017, 71 universities in China had set up majors related to artificial intelligence (AI). Lei Chaozi, Director of the ministry’s Science and Technology Department, said that by 2030, China will have some of the world's best AI innovation centers, capable of providing the country with technical support and professionals.

The Ministry of Education released an “AI Innovation Action Plan for Colleges and Universities” in April, which said Chinese universities should have optimized systems that fit AI development by 2020.

China has been actively promoting the development of AI and other cutting-edge technologies as it hopes to move away from the country’s strength in low-end manufacturing and up the value chain to higher-margin services.
