Geely confirms Canadian market entry with 2027 launch

12/10 2026 17:30

Geely’s move into Canada shows how quickly Chinese automakers are acting on Ottawa’s softer stance toward China-built electric cars

Geely will begin selling cars in Canada in 2027, with its newly formed Geely Auto Canada unit now assembling dealer and service partners ahead of launch. Models, prices and locations are still to be confirmed, though the Chinese automaker arrives with scale: its parent group’s global sales topped 3.02 million vehicles in 2025.

Nearly 1.69 million of those were electrified, the segment where Canadian policy has recently opened up. Ottawa agreed in January 2026 to admit a quota of Chinese-built electric vehicles at a reduced tariff, easing a 100% surtax imposed in 2024. That shift gives Geely a clearer route into a market that had been effectively closed to Chinese electric vehicles.

Its cars already reach over 100 markets, but earning buyer confidence is the harder task for a brand with no Canadian history, a challenge the company openly acknowledges. Further detail on vehicles, pricing and retail sites will follow via a new Canadian website.

In a statement, Bryan Wu, Managing Director of Geely Auto Canada, said: “Canada represents an important next step in Geely Auto’s international growth. We are entering this market with a long-term commitment, bringing our global technology and engineering capabilities to Canadian drivers while building strong local partnerships and the support customers need to feel confident in choosing Geely. We know that trust is earned over time, and we are committed to earning it here.”

Why this matters:

  • Tariff quota opens the door. Canada’s reduced rate on a capped volume of China-built EVs gives Geely a route that was closed under the 100% surtax, though it will share that quota with other Chinese entrants and Western OEMs’ China-built models.
  • Dealer network signals long-term intent. Building a local retail and service network ahead of a 2027 launch suggests Geely is relying on established partners to overcome Canadian buyers’ unfamiliarity with Chinese brands.
  • Canada as North American proving ground. With the US market effectively closed to Chinese vehicles, Canada could become the main test bed for Chinese brands on the continent, which may draw scrutiny from Washington during USMCA negotiations.
